Plant in the Fall!

Fall is a great time to plant trees and shrubs in your landscape.  The cooler temperatures of the fall season decrease the heat stress that summer plantings take on.  Fall weather also typically brings increased rainfalls, which require less demand on irrigation systems and other supplemental water to get new plant roots well-established.  Planting can be stressful to any plant at any time of the year but fall weather typically helps with root development and plant establishment for the next season. Kids at Bradley

One of the most overlooked benefits to fall plantings is that the ground soil temperatures are warm.  This helps stimulate new root development.  If identical plants are planted in the spring verses the fall, the fall plant will establish more quickly due to the warmer soil temperatures.  Be aware of planting too late in the season however.  Most trees and shrubs can be planted up to freezing.  Perennials however may heave and dry out quickly if roots have not penetrated in to the surrounding soil.

Roots are truly the anchor to a healthy plant. They not only stabilize the plant but help uptake water and nutrients.  In lieu of using a fertilizer when fall planting, try using a root booster.  Fertilizer may cause the plant to push out new growth which may not harden off and die when winter comes.004

Don’t forget to water!  Even though the temperatures may be cooler in the fall, new plants still need supplemental watering.  Even if leaves have fallen off your plant or if your perennial has started to go dormant, make sure to water to keep roots moist and plants healthy.
